How do you get your bike from one side of the country to another other than riding it or strapping it to the back of your car...well you can pack it up and put it on a plane. The charges for checking a bicycle at the airport can vary, but most airlines will charge an additional $50 fee for transporting it. One other alternative to taking your bike with you on the flight is to simply ship it to your destination. It will probably be a bit more expensive, but will also get handled much easier. Either way you will have to pack up your bike and this is how you do it:
-First, you need to get a bike box from a bike store...if you go to your local bike store, they should have a few extras just laying around that you can probably just have.
-Next, take off your front wheel, pedals and handlebars so that everything can fit inside of the box.
-Now, put everything inside of the box...pretty much how it was when you first got it. Keep the pedals separate in your luggage to prevent them from bumping around inside the box dinging up your bike.
-Fill the box with crumbled up newspaper to prevent damage to the bike during the transport.
-Tape up the box, and check the box at the airport.
or you can invest in a nice bag and pack like this...much safer, I'd say. Check out these great bike bags offered through eBay.
